Overview (No Spoilers): After Scarlet, the second novel in The Lunar Chronicles, introduced many new fascinating characters, the follow up novel, Cress continued to build on the depth of those personalities, while adding a few new ones into the mix. One of the personalities that played a significantly larger role was that of the book title’s namesake, Cress, who we were first introduced to in the inaugural novel as the Lunar who tipped off Cinder as to Queen Levana’s devious intentions toward Prince Kai. Her sweet, innocent character is easy to fall for especially with regard of her adventures with my other favorite character, Carswell Thorne. This third installment was action packed with kidnappings, battles, and key revelations, leaving the reader highly entertained throughout this quick read. The main character, Cinder’s chapters were a bit boring, as I felt disappointed whenever the POV would return to her indecisive, tunnel-visioned struggle to make her next move. Overall, this was my favorite book of The Lunar Chronicles and I’m looking forward to see how Meyer will continue to incorporate other famous fairytales!
Additional Insight (Spoilers Abound):
- Meyer finally surprised me with a plot point! I loved that Dr. Erland was actually Cress’ father!
- I loved Thorne getting Iko her own lifelike droid. I’m hoping that Cress will be able to fix all of her after the battle with Sybil?
- Will they be able to save Scarlet from Luna? Maybe Scarlet has hidden powers too?
- What does it mean that Cinder is finding out more from her powers?
- How will Prince Kai handle his kidnapping by Cinder? What will their next step be? How will the Queen react?
Will Wolf recover from his mourning? - Will Thorne develop or perhaps realize his feelings for Cress?
- What does it mean that the Letumosis has mutated to infect Lunars?
- What will we find out from Princess Winter?

Great review! I’ve only read Cinder in this series. I own Scarlet and want to read it but, for whatever reason, I’ve just never got to it.

What fairy tale is Cress based on? I haven’t read this one yet, but it is on my list. I liked the first two in the series.

Cress is based on Rapunzel. I’m close to finishing Winter and have to make the claim that Cress was my favorite of the Lunar series. 🙂

Wonderful review! I have similar sentiments. Cress is, so far, my favorite book of the Lunar Chronicles. I especially love the relationship between Cress and Thorne. I think they’re my favorite couple. I was a bit disappointed with Cinder’s scenes. Hopefully Winter is just as good, if not better, than Cress! 😀

I’ve been slowly reading through the Lunar Chronicles. I read Cress last year and will eventually get around to Winter. I really like the re-telling. As the series goes on, I like Cinder less, though.

Winter is a hefty book, but it’s definitely worth the read! I have to agree about Cinder’s chapters – once you’ve got all these new and exciting characters with different backgrounds and powers, it’s very easy to become disinterested in her, even though she’s arguably the main character in the series! Great review! 🙂

I only have an hour left in Winter’s audiobook! I really flew through listening to it! At least Cinder’s chapters get a bit better!
