The Last Bookstore – Los Angeles, CA

Everyone needs a yes person in their life. That friend that when you or she calls with a spur of the moment adventure idea the person of the other end doesn’t bat an eye. My beautiful, smart bestie, Sarah is just that person. While we had been scheming for a big trip, we finally were spurred to a decision by Sarah getting a new awesome job and having a narrow window available for us to go abroad. So three weeks ago we booked our tickets to Spain for ten days! Trying to coordinate landing times in Barcelona, with one of us flying from Detroit and the other from LA was proving nigh impossible with regard to convenient flights or landing times. So, upon finding a flight under $60 from DTW to LAX it was well worth it for Sarah and I to be able to fly nonstop from LAX to Barcelona together for $200 one way.

This plan allowed me to have a whole day in LA before our red eye that night. Other than last minute supplies, errands, and packing, Sarah squeezed in taking me to two bookstores I’d been wanting to visit! The first bookstore we went to was one I’d wanted to explore for years now after seeing it on almost every list of top bookstores in the world, aptly named The Last Bookstore. This beautiful store was amazing and now ranks as one of my favorite bookstores. Previously that title had been held exclusively by John K King Rare and Used Books in Detroit, Michigan, however I think the mitten’s famous bookstore will now have to share the top spot with LA’s treasure. You can’t fairly compare the two, because King’s bookstore has a raw, overwhelming aesthetic, whereas The Lost Bookstore was deliberately, and purposeful designed to awe in even the most minute of details. I can’t recommend enough that you make an effort to explore this fantastic bookstore if you find yourself in or around the LA area!   11. OOH! I am so jealous. I have had this on my bucket list for a few years now and just haven’t made it a point to go. I will have to go, you’re post makes it look even better than the images I’ve already seen of it.

    Yes, the Guell Park in Barcelona IS a ‘must see’. It’s a pity the Cemetery of Forgotten Books [Shadow of the Wind] isn’t real. 🙂

  22. I love this 🖤 reminds me of my relationship with my best friend…bookstores are our go to! I’m also from the Detroit area and you’re right about John King in Detroit. It’s magnificent and could keep someone in for an entire day. Spain is my absolute favorite place to visit! I hope it is/was a great experience for you two.
