Winter’s Heart by Robert Jordan

Rate: 4/5

Medium: Audiobook

Overview (No Spoilers):

My Wheel of Time journey continues with Winter’s Heart!I can’t believe I’m ten or books into this series and that I’ve been working on it for over a year now.  Winter’s Heart contained my first encounter of the dreaded mid series lull, specifically in Perrin’s story, which consumed the first third of this novel. Thankfully, the reemergence of my favorite character from his one book hiatus, Mat Cauthon breathed new life into the stagnant novel. The constant amusing banter and the great supporting cast that surround Mat make his chapters impossible to not enjoy. I find myself smirking throughout all of Mat’s scenes, which is a far cry from the annoyance I felt toward this feisty guy at the beginning of this literary journey.   I honestly can’t wait to see what happens next with Mat and his group of loyal followers.  Rand’s finish was also high impact as so many of his loose threads become resolved, albeit into a tight knot, ultimately leading to climatic ending. The ending of a Winter’s Heart completely changes the game, as new rules will need to be established due to Rand’s daring gamble.  Overall, Winter’s Heart progressed the adventures of this fascinating literary world, and ends with a monster cliff hanger that leaves the reader eagerly anticipating the next installment.

  1. Oh my, the Perrin-Faile never-ending story…. That couple went from my favorite in the early books to so not my favorite. You and I are totally sympatico about Mat Cauthon. He is the beacon of joy in that series and the one character who kept me reading it to the end.

    • Thanks Nicole. I would rather view it as I’m savoring this series by balancing it throughout the 80 other books I read this year. 😀 As a rule, I try to not read sequential books in a series back to back to allow them to stand alone. I’m really enjoying this literary world though. Have you read it?

      • I read them years ago. It was a great series!! 😁 I love to read sequential books back to back… But, I never seem to have time to! 😂 I just posted a review for the first book in a mystery series that ended in a cliffhanger, and because of prior plans it’s going to be about a month before I can get to the second one!! Oh, the pain… The pain of it all! 😂😂

  2. I’m glad to see you loved Winter’s Heart, save the Perrin-Faile morass. Personally it was my favorite book of the mid-series lull, unfortunately the next book is my (and probably nearly everyone else’s) least favorite book of the series. Just remember after Crossroads of Twilight, things improve drastically.

    • I’m so glad to hear that it gets better Matt! I’m right in the middle of CoT (specifically Perrin’s section) and I’m struggling more than I have in any book in the series yet. Why can’t Mat be in every scene! 😀
