Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales by Heather Fawcett

Overview (No Spoilers)

Fawcett delivers a perfect ending to this sweet trilogy in Emily Wilde’s Compendium of Lost Tales. This final installment picks up right in the aftermath of the last book, with Wendell continuing on his quest to return to his realm of Faerie and assume the long awaited mantle of King. This story has a different feel as Emily has to race against time and inevitability to try to save Wendell from becoming trapped in the patterns of the established stories.

This Compendium of Lost Tales feels like a such fitting conclusion with our socially awkward Emily, as Fawcett brings so many of our favorite faces throughout the first two books together in this last piece of the trilogy. That said, a few new characters are added to the mix from the ancient Taran, to another lost scholar, Niamh.

I can’t get over how neatly Fawcett ties old and new into this compendium. She somehow packs in Lilja and Margaret along with Poe and the Hidden King, plus we get ample time with Ariadne and Farris. Despite adding in these familiar faces and locations into a story that holds its own intrigue, this last installment does not feel forced or cluttered. Instead, this conclusion is packed with nostalgia while building upon the new imminent danger.

Additional Insight (Spoilers Abound)

  • Ugh. My heart melted when Wendell tracked down a word of power to heal Shadow’s blood, giving Emily more time with him.
  • Fiesty Orga is another welcome addition to the story. Her interactions with Taran were amusing. Poor Fae just wanted the kitty to like him. Never works for cats.
  • I wish Callum has been more developed!
  • Farris knew Emily’s grandfather! Why did he hold back telling her for so long and why did her family hide it!
  • What will Farris and Ariadne thing of Faerie?
  • Poe’s mother was terrifying! Will sweet Poe grow into her? I loved that Poe was in this story again.
  • Who did the Hidden King marry?

  1. I’m so glad to learn that the series ends well. Too often a good story is wrecked by a shoddy ending. Really looking forward to reading this one, I’ve been saving it for a rainy day.
