This past week my coworker and I were in Orlando for a work conference and had a several large chunks of time available for us to do some exploring. While our initial impulse was to try to fit in one of the many, many theme parks that call Orlando home, we quickly eliminated that option due to time crunches only allowing a few rushed hours in the park prior to closing. However, we could hardly contain our excitement upon realizing that one of the afternoons we had free coincided with the Detroit Tigers Grapefruit League, i.e., spring training, season opener in Lakeland, Florida, which was a relatively short drive from the resort that the conference was being held. I’ve been a Tigers fan for as long as I can remember. Many of my earliest and lasting memories of my Great Grandma involve her avidly listening to every Tigers baseball game on the radio, while working her way through one of her crossword puzzle books. Needless to say, I’ve always wanted to go to one of their spring training games! Tiffany and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Joker Marchant’s Stadium during which we had beautiful, sunny weather, despite the Tigers losing to the Baltimore Orioles! Check out our photos below!
If you’re wondering how Tiffany and I filled the rest of the free time during our trip we soaked in the rays poolside and at Cocoa Beach before having to head back to wintery Michigan. I finished Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation and absolutely loved it! Stay tuned for a book review!
Any day at a baseball game is better than most alternatives. Glad you went.
I’m headed to spring training in Arizona in a couple of weeks. Three days, three games.

Oh that will be a fun, especially on St. Patty’s Day! I’m not going to lie, I might be hold a grudge against the Giants. I was at the World Series game where they swept the Tigers.

Despite being born in Michigan and raised in the Boston suburbs, my New Yorker parents made sure I grew a Yankees fan! Hoping I’ll make down to Florida at some point in the near future.

I’m sure there could be a worse team to root for! 😉 (Joke) I hope you make it down for a spring training game too! It was fun to be in that relaxed environment, plus you are so close to the players!

Being in Florida, this is one of my perks for putting up with the Hurricane season. Now that the Nationals and Astros moved to the Palm Beaches – I have four teams within a few minutes of home. Cardinals and Marlins in Jupiter and the afore mentioned teams in West Palm. I have been to the Joker Merchant Stadium as well to take in the Tigers before the recent renovation. Love seeing Al Kaline’s parking spot. Thanks for reposting this in your 2017 review. Sorry I missed it the first go around.

That’s so cool Guy that you have so many teams playing basically in your back yard! I had never been to the Joker Merchant Stadium prior to the renovations, however I’ve heard they’re a vast improvement. Do you have a favorite team?

I’m from the west coast. Grew up Angels Fan and hold on dearly. However I’m a fan of the game and love them all except the Dodgers and Yankees.
