Overview (No Spoilers)

Oh Bartholomew. I will now make a literary prophecy that a year from now, fantasy literature will be inundated with gargoyles.

The Knight and the Moth was on many of the most anticipated releases of 2025 lists and it well deserved the early hype. It has been a long time since I’ve read such a unique book in this genre. Trust me when I say, read this one before everyone is talking about it.

This book had me absolutely hooked from almost page one. The Diviners were shrouded in so much mystery. The questions kept mounting as the story progressed from what their eyes looking like to their visions and unexpected disappearances. The secrets kept building and lent an air of danger, desperation, and urgency that kept me picking this book up every chance I got.

Six is so sheltered before the fateful day that King Benji made his way to Aisling Cathedral for his divination. Slowly, and through some unexpected daring, Six grows in leaps and bounds as she learns more of the world beyond. Everything she knows is challenged with every new scenario and person she meets, allowing her to decide for the first time in her life who she wants to be.

Most of the story was limited to Six, Rory, Maude, Benji, and the Gargoyle. By the end of their journey it seems like they stumble into success easily and with little difficulties. The early tasks are almost impossible, however the hurdles grow easier, despite the stakes being even higher every time.

Overall, The Knight and the Moth is chock full of action, plus has a slow burning, steamy (almost) romance that everyone is rooting for. This unique, heavy story is refreshing and gripping. I can’t wait to find out where Gillig will take this story next.

Additional Insight (Spoilers Abound):

  • The sprites are posed to play such a larger role in the next books. Who will feed them and harness their strength and numbers?
  • Is the spring really the last of the omen tools? It doesn’t quite fit the bill. I think its the hammer and chisel.
  • You could feel Benji’s betray building but it deviates so far from the young boy that Six met.
  • Will Sybil Delling find her family?
  • The Bat Gargoyle was my favorite part of this story. I loved his many little quirks and his unwavering loyalty.
  • What steps will Maude and Rory take next? Will the Gargoyle survive?
  • My heart breaks for the other dive diviners and all their hopes that were snuffed out.  What a horrifying twist that the Omens would drink their blood.
