Overview (No Spoilers):
Despite typically withholding praise over a series until I’m fully caught up on any existing novels, I’m officially on the cusp of fangirling over Sanderson’s The Stormlight Archives. Upon finishing Words of Radiance, I was eager, if not impatient to dive into Oathbringer, as such I’m so thankful to my fellow blogger, Beer Rants and Books, for bringing Edgedancer to my attention. I hadn’t realized Sanderson had published a novella that not only expanded upon one of the most intriguing new characters in Words of Radiance but moved pawns into place for highly anticipated events to come in Oathbringer. That being said, I loved Edgedancer, listening to the entire book during one experiment heavy day in lab. Initially in Words of Radiance I couldn’t decide what I thought of this girl, of whom it might be an understatement to say is rough around the edges, but when given the complete focus in Edgedancer she blossoms into a complex character that has the potential to become one of my favorites among a cast that already has stolen my literary heart. She not only contrasts sharply and rather entertainingly with her poor refined spren, Wyndle but stands in a light of her own when compared with the majority of the other polished characters in this wide ranging story. We can only anticipate with bated breath the meeting of her with Kaladin. Overall, Edgedancer was a wonderful continuation of a delightful series that is only getting better with every additional installment.
Additional Insight (Spoilers Abound):
- Lift’s obsession with food was so very comical. Spread throughout the story would be the mentioning of food, especially pancakes, often during the most unexpected times. I laughed out loud when Lift made Wyndle to be a fork.
- What will the consequences of Lift asking the Nightwatcher to not change? The Nightwatcher must be a spren similar to the Stormfather. Will we meet her? What is Lift’s curse?
- One of my favorite parts of the story is when Lift communicates to Gawx through the spanreed through the very proper scribes.
- Why didn’t Szeth kill Lift? How did he get involved with Darkness?
Who is Darkness? How many Radients have he killed? Where did he fly off to at the end? - Who was the old man (Aimian) that Lift interacted with? Are there others like him? What role will he play in the bigger story?
Great review! I can not get enough of Sanderson 🙂

Hello Beaton! I couldn’t have described Lift better! She really is a breath of fresh air in a litany of proper characters. That’s why Rock is also one of my favorites.

I’m thinking about making this a “home” read, especially before Oathbringer comes out in paperback this fall and I read it. Thanks for the great review, I’m looking forward to reading this book even more.

Good to hear. Like I said in my comment, I’m waiting for Oathbringer in paperback (mass market to be exact) since that’s what format I have the other two books in. So I want get my hands on it until October.
I’m going to be reading Edgedancer sometime before then for sure.
