Overview (No Spoilers):
First and foremost, I’m a huge Rothfuss fan and a constant defender of his long delayed continuation of his Kingkiller Chronicles. As with Martin, I would rather Rothfuss take his time and release something amazing instead of feeling rushed by deadlines or ‘fans’ being impatient instead of releasing something substandard and disappointing. Rothfuss’ first three books were truly special and The Narrow Road Between Desires is a fantastic reminder of how much I enjoy his writing.
The Narrow Road Between Desires follows Bast over the span of one day. We learn a little bit of how this student of Kvothe spends his days in the tiny backwater town that they call home. Fairies seem to be a trend in literature recently as my last five reads have all been centered around this fantastical element. Compared to the first two books in the series, we really start to understand the nuances of fairy trades in this world as well as some of the magic rules. The interactions with Bast and the children he deals with are so delightfully entertaining. One request from an especially desperate kid will severely dent your heart. How Bast weaves together everything he learns throughout the day to resolve everyone’s issues is like puzzle pieces falling into place and in such an elegant choreography that is quinnessential ROthfuss.
The Narrow Road Between Desires has been reworked from the The Lightning Tree which is a story that predates anything Rothfuss has published from the Kingkiller Chronicles. I haven’t personally read The Lightning Tree so this novel was a fun visit back into a much loved literary world.
Overall, The Narrow Road Between Desires is a much welcome day spent with clever Bast and is over far too soon.
