The Enchanter’s Counsel by Thalib Razi

Overview (No Spoilers):

The Enchanter’s Counsel was a light, meandering story that veered down unexpected paths, leading young Mizan on quite the adventure. After graduating from university, Mizan is lost as he returns to his family’s already crowded business. His minimal prospects to use the degree he had just earned seem a hopeless pursuit. With his family disappointed and finances struggling, can Mizan find a way to contribute or launch his own career?

Razi created a complicated world of full messy politics and blatant prejudices where goblins, dwarves, and elves coexist. Every interaction, relationship, or job opportunity was laced with this underlying tension that builds throughout this novel.

Without giving away too much of what Razi has in store for young Mizan, the young goblin stumbled into opportunities beyond anything he could have hoped for by being a good friend over and over again.  This kept the story light, while turning the Mizan’s path into a series of happy accidents. Along the way, we were treated to the magical wonders of this world and a mystery that threatened its core.

Overall, The Enchanter’s Counsel was a cosy, meandering story that follows Mizan as he finds his way to magic, love, and friendships.

Additional Insights (Spoilers Abound)

  • Wolff was such an interesting, shallow bad guy, especially when we first met him with Apple and Mizan. I didn’t see him coming back into the story in such a big way.
  • Ugh. I just wanted Mizan and Daena to actually talk. What will her dad think of the match?
  • The recharging the old gems felt like such a revelation and though it came back into the story a few times, it didn’t carry the same weight I thought it might in the end.
  • Knowing that mining could destroy the world, will the Encanter’s Counsel still use gems? What about for Newt’s staff?
  • Will Nick and Apple stay together? Will Apple’s songs get banned?
  • I liked the Poster Boys and that the friends all stuck together despite their separate paths.
