Overview (No Spoilers)

A friend recommended The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna as a light cozy read that would cleanse my reading palette following some of the heavy dense tomes that I have been occupied with. I’m so thankful for this recommendation because this quick read is utterly delightful and I didn’t want my time with Mika Moon to come to a close.

When themes like found family, slow burn romance, and loneliness, are coupled with an especially drawn out mystery I couldn’t help but become significantly attached to this story, especially the key characters. Who wouldn’t love Mika Moon, who had been deliberately isolated since she was a child, leaving her starved for community. When she stumbled into a situation that broke all of the rules, which have dominated her life thus far, she was teased with a happiness that could only be imagined.

The supporting cast was positively welcoming as their warm dispositions were a stark contrast to Mika’s isolated youth. How quickly they came to feel like family, even to me, made the mystery they were so obviously hiding that much more intriguing. While much of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches was predictable, the big reveal was not what I was expecting and immediately heightened the tension as the price of losing the brief happiness Mika had only just found unimaginably heartbreaking.

Overall, the incremental softening of Mika’s walls will draw any reader into her plight, leaving them unable to put down this feel-good, heartwarming read until she unravels the mystery at hand.

Additional Insights (Spoilers Abound):

  • I loved Jamie and Mika’s slow burn relationship. Both were so lonely and fit so well together. Ian’s unabashed matchmaking might have been my favorite part of this read. Though it was Ken’s frank honesty to Jamie that drew forth ugly tears from me.
  • How will this relaxing of Primrose’s rules change the Britain Witches.
  • What will happen to the mean spirited lawyer?
  • I wish Primrose’s sister had lived to see her change of heart.
  • Can the curse be broken?
  • What will happen to the three young girls?
