Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

Rate: 3/5

Medium: Audiobook

Overview (No Spoilers):

Wuthering Heights is everywhere right now. I always love a good classic and with how visually stunning the trailers for this movie are I couldn’t wait to watch. I needed a good love story in my life and with the trailers boldly proclaiming that this is the greatest love story of all time, I couldn’t wait to immerse myself in some cheesy nineteenth century drama.

And then I experienced the greatest con. I started listening to the audiobook of Wuthering Heights and almost right away had to check to make sure I had picked up the right book. Everyone is bitter and miserable with love not even being in their vocabulary. I’m chagrined to publicly admit my next steps. I paused my read and proceeded to do something I have only done a handful of times in my life when reading. I headed right for Google to look up a synopsis of Wuthering Heights. Scandalous, I know. And yet, I have no regrets as the story only gets more heartbreaking than I could have anticipated. I ended up finishing this miserably sad read but am thankful I was able to steel myself for the cruel twists and turns.

I don’t think there was one likable character throughout this tragedy. There are a few rays of sun, though they become weathered under the constant barrage of bitterness.

I spent most of this read mulling over how a story so seeped in misery can be so beloved. How can a story so full of bitterness have such staying power? And then came the end of Wuthering Heights, where against all odds and having endured much duress, love found a way to shine bright enough to make all the shadows pull back. The dark and bitterness of the majority of the story has only served to make the love standout that much more brilliantly.

I have to go see the movie. I know it’s only a loose adaptation and [SPOILER] they cut out the whole second half of this story, but I’m so curious how the director might change the story to make it less dreadfully sad.

Overall, Wuthering Heights is by no means the greatest love story and should only be untaken with a hardened heart. This brutal read will weigh heavy as revenge only sows more misery and heartache.
