Overview (No Spoilers):

With the world mired in chaos I continue to find myself drawn toward cozy, feel good reads. Can’t Spell Treason without Tea is a cute read that is entertaining, though doesn’t quite have the awe factor that some of its contemporaries possess.

Can’t Spell Treason without Tea has all of the same ingredients as Legends and Lattes but slightly loses some of the charm in the remixing. I puzzled over the differences, wondering where the cozy has been diluted and in the end settled on two sources. The main issue I had is that Kianthe held such an important role as a mage and her deciding to run away to play shopkeeper felt off. I couldn’t help but feel like Kianthe was abandoning the people who needed her and escaping her responsibilities.

The second aspect that stood out was with the pacing. Reyna and Kianthe became lost in the day to day details, slowing the pacing after the fast start. With endlessly being hunted by the Queen and taking up residence in a former bandit holdout, the two love birds are initially on edge, though far too soon relax into the minute daily routine.

Overall, Can’t Spell Treason without Tea is a quick read that is entertaining, though it spent the bulk bogged down in details.

Additional Insights (Spoilers Abound):

  • The gambit with Reyna and the Queen was stressful to say the least. How will it all play out long term?
  • The guard hunting Reyna was such a creep. Did he really think Reyna would come back to him?
  • Where are the missing dragon eggs? How will Kianthe find them?
  • Knowing they will be hunted, why did the two lovebirds not travel further away?
