Overview (Mild Spoilers):
My four year old and I have been working for months to read her first Harry Potter book. Every night we would read for a few minutes until she was ready to sleep, slowly working our way through the story. Quinn has watched the first few movies and delighted in pointing out the differences in the story from the movie. I loved sharing this experience with her.
This is the third time I’ve read this Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and it gets better every time through. How Rowling evolves the story from the dismal and hopeless situation Harry starts in with the Dursleys to the insane and impossible world of Hogwarts is pure magic itself. From the worldbuilding to the found family that Harry surrounds himself with, this is such an entertaining read. I can’t help but be filled with the same wonder as I was the first time I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I will never fail to get goosebumps in the scene at Ollivander’s.
While the movie follows the book well, one key difference is Hermoine and Harry sneaking little Norbert to one of the top of the Hogwart’s towers to meet strangers. I’d forgotten about this scene and I was so nervous for the two young students. I couldn’t for the life of me remember what happened during this sequence and was on the edge of my seat.
Another thing that surprised me about this novel is how little Dumbledore is in book one. He looms so large in some of the later novels, but he is barely in this first novel. That said, Draco is just as awful as remembered.
Overall, I’m so glad Quinn and I embarked on this reread and I was able to share a book with her that I love so very much. It was fun seeing her emotions challenged in this read from pure joy when Fred and George promised to send Ginny a toilet seat to fear when Harry was fighting against Voldemort. I can’t wait to keep reading with her.
